French Bulldogs Cardiff State Beach

Gus and Minnie’s Dog Photography Session

I was lucky enough to meet two adorable French Bulldogs, Gus and Minnie, during a shift at Pet Power Studio in Encinitas. They love to shop there with their mom and I met them a few times when they came in. Whenever I see adorable dogs, I just have to tell the owner that I am a dog photographer in hopes that they might want me to photograph theirs. It also helps that there are some beautiful metal prints of mine hanging in the studio, which Nicole adored and let me know she wanted a gallery wall of her own.

Lucky for me, Nicole scheduled a consultation call later that day and we booked a session for the next month! They love walking at Cardiff State Beach, which is dog friendly but dogs have to remain on leash, so we decided to do the shoot there. Of course it’s always important to look at the tides when doing a beach shoot, so we scheduled the perfect day in February when it would be low tide. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling well the week of our shoot, so we decided to postpone to a Sunday in March, and boy am I glad we did!

The day of our shoot, I kept looking at the La Jolla webcam to see the conditions at the coast. There were thin clouds all day and I just knew it would be a great sunset. It was also the first day of Daylight Savings, so the sun set later than usual. We met about an hour before and the weather conditions were just PERFECT!

Minnie and Gus were the absolute sweetest pups and so excited for their shoot, especially once they smelled the cheese I had in my fanny pack! We headed down the beach and the tide was low giving plenty of space on the beach, as well as beautiful mossy rocks that were the perfect posing place.

We started with a few shots in front of the cliffs with that beautiful yellow coloring and the dogs’ fur looked so good against it!

Next we moved closer to the water for some adorable shots on the san and of course some action shots of the dogs running! Can you believe the dogs were on leash for ALL of these photos?! We also used slip leads instead of attaching the leash to a normal collar since they don’t usually wear collars, and it works so well for positioning the dogs and for easy editing later!

I grabbed a few more shots with the cliffs in the background and then the sky started to turn colors, so we made a beeline for the mossy rocks. We spent the rest of our time here and I photographed each dog individually, together, close up and wide angle, and boy was it FUN!

The colors of the sunset just kept getting more and more vivid and we stayed and played with light, silhouettes and all sorts of different fun shots until it was starting to get dark.

Gus was so chill and posed for the camera like a pro, while Minnie was more enthusiastic, and I loved seeing their different personalities shine through! These two got so much attention from other beach-goers and loved everyone they met.

We had such a spectacular evening, I am so happy we had to reschedule our original date…it was meant to be!
