Geno and JuJu Australian Shepherds Sunset Cliffs

Sunset Photoshoot at Santa Cruz Cliffs San Diego

Genie’s mom, Sarah, and I worked together as Physical Therapists for a few months and soon after meeting at work she found out I was a dog photographer and told me she had two Australian Shepherds that she was obsessed with. We both loved to adventure with our dogs, so we always talked about what we were up to with our pups. She had told me her 3-year-old dog, Genie, had been limping and she thought it might be an ACL tear.

Sarah got a new job and I actually didn’t really get to say goodbye to her at work, but a few days later I got a message from her on Instagram. What she thought was an ACL injury turned out to be a large mass on Genie’s right hip/pelvis. Cancer. And it had metastasized to his lungs. My heart dropped. She let me know she wanted to have photos taken because they didn’t know how much time they had left with Geno, so we scheduled a shoot for 6 days later.

Sarah lives in Point Loma and often takes Genie and Juju to walk between Ocean Beach pier and Sunset Cliffs at a spot called Santa Cruz Cliffs. I had never been to that spot, but was more than willing to shoot there because it was a special place for them.

On the day of our session, I got there early to scope out the spot. It was high tide, so there wasn’t too much room on the beach and there were a decent amount of people, but we made it work!

We started with some family photos of all of them. The sun was bright! I saw a spot where there was still water between some rocks and knew it would be the perfect place to capture a reflection, so I got a few photos of Sarah and Geno and just Geno there.

Next we headed to the sandy beach to capture some shots in the shade with the rocks behind. The pups did so good with all the other people and distractions around! I got some nice family photos and some more special photos of Genie.

The sun was beginning to set and the sky was starting to turn all sorts of beautiful colors. Sarah wanted some photos with the ocean in the background and now that the sun had gone down a bit more, it was the perfect time! The dogs headed up onto a big rock to get a better vantage point. I captured a few photos of each pup with their mama.

After this, the sky was beginning to turn even more vibrant and I wanted to make sure and get some silhouette shots, so we headed back to the flatter area of the cliffs. We started with a family shot and the coolest thing happened when the waves crashed and giant splashes graced the photo! I got a few special shots of just Sarah and Geno as well.

Our last shots of the evening were of the dogs posed in front of the epic sunset. They were such troopers for posing with me holding a big light stick over their heads!

I’m so glad I had the chance to capture Geno and Juju at one of their favorite walking spots. Sarah decided on a beautiful signature album to enjoy and display the photos and look back on for years to come!
