Fall Color Session in Mammoth Lakes, California

If you’re looking for a great place to experience the fall colors in California, look no further than Mammoth lakes and the surrounding areas. Sometime between the end of September until mid-end of October, the leaves on the aspen trees change from green to yellow and make for the most magical backdrop for photos.

I have been visiting Mammoth in the fall for the last 4 years and each time it brings me so much joy getting to leaf peep and find the best aspen groves. This year (2023) we visited October 9-12th and the colors in many places were at their peak.

One of my favorite places to visit while in Mammoth no matter what time of year it is is Convict Lake. When driving on the 395, it’s a little ways before the exit to the town of Mammoth Lakes. Convict Lake is lined with aspen trees in some areas making it a perfect backdrop for epic photos.

This is where I met Lulah and her parents for her photo session! Lulah’s parents found me through Christi of Sierra Dog Ventures (an epic doggy daycare for Mammoth and Bishop pups) as Lulah gets to adventure with SDV twice a week! Lulah is a beautiful husky malamute mix and looks like a wolf. She was MADE to live in the mountains!

We walked along the pathway around the lake which was lined with aspen trees. Lulah got a feel for posing for the camera and also had a few chances to run free for some action shots!

Next we headed toward the water and she posed perfectly on a rock with all of Convict Lake in the background. There were some fallen leaves on the ground so naturally I had to get a “puppy dog eyes” shot with the leaves surrounding her. This was also the perfect opportunity to capture a few special moments with her parents.

After this, we hopped in the car and drove to the further side of the lake where there is a pebble beach area. Lulah hopped onto a large tree log and stayed still long enough for me to capture some beautiful portraits with the aspen trees framing her fluffy face.

After this, we let her run around and have some fun (maybe too much fun because she went to see if the fisherman there had caught anything) and captured her after taking a swim and just being the happy girl she is.

This location fit her well and I absolutely loved getting to document her adventurous and sweet personality right where she lives!
