Whitney + Rudy + Dash

Convict Lake, Mammoth Lakes CA

My absolute favorite lake in Mammoth is Convict Lake and my favorite time of year to visit is in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

I’ve been here many times, but wanted to have a look at what the foliage looked like before shooting there the next day. Barley and I went to check it out late in the afternoon and when we got there, it was so windy that there were whitecaps taking over the lake and the beautiful leaves were getting blown off the trees in droves.

We got out of the car, had a quick look around and got right back in because we’re wimps and can’t handle the cold weather (I was also not dressed for it). I hoped and prayed that the storm would pass and it wouldn’t be as windy the next morning for our shoot. Barley and I car camped and it rained most of the night.

The next morning we woke up early and headed to Convict Lake to meet Whitney the Goldendoodle. We pulled up and there were spotty clouds in the sky and sunrise colors were making an appearance. We walked towards the lake and it was so calm that it looked the glass and the mountains were reflecting in the back. I was SO thrilled the conditions cooperated!

We met Whit the doodle and her parents by the boat dock where a small boulder wall surrounds the boats and this is where we started our shoot. Whitney wasn’t so sure about the scary rocks, but with some treats and coaxing she was willing to pose for a few photos. I’d say we nailed the shot!

After this, we meandered along the trail through the changing leaves and Whitney had some fun running full speed at me and my camera.

Our last stop was at the waterfront where Whitney had no problem running into the freezing cold water to fetch a stick. She was in her element! The way the sunlight was hitting the water made it look beautifully golden, just like Whitney!

We ended the shoot with a few impromptu family photos, which if I do say so myself, capture these three so well!

We said our goodbyes and I drove a little ways down the road to meet my next models, Rudy and Dash the mini Aussies. I enjoyed the reflection perfection at the lakefront while I waited for them and even found a totally random dog to photograph 🙂

Rudy and Dash arrived a bit late because they had to wait for a herd of deer to cross the road (#mountainlivingproblems), but they were ready for some fun! We started our shoot by the water after these two took a little dip as you can see from their wet coats. We used leashes to get the perfect shot of them sitting together.

I knew there was an aspen grove towards the back of the lake, so we hopped onto the trail to head to it. These two had so much fun off-leash running on the trail and herding some of the other hikers.

There were so many beautiful spots to capture photos and we had a great time!

It was Barley’s birthday, so I made sure to take him for a hike around the lake afterwards, too, and he loved it. If you ever find yourself in Mammoth, do yourself a favor and visit Convict Lake! You won’t regret it 🙂

Happy Tails!
